A fine line exists between emotional eating and full blown eating disorders. Binge eaters, also known as compulsive eaters, are usually heavy emotional eaters. They go above and beyond the behaviors of normal emotional eating.

Certain characteristics are prevalent in people who have full blown eating disorders. Chiefly, they eat a lot of food, and they eat it fast. Amazingly, they do feel out of control concerning food and tend to obsess about it.

Do you know anyone who hides food around the house? Or better yet, they eat in hiding? How about those who slip into the kitchen when everyone else is asleep? Emotional eaters and those with eating disorders may have experienced a traumatic event in their lives.

This event could have been physical or even sexual abuse. Research has shown that the number of people with eating disorders who have experienced abuse is higher than those who suffer with simple emotional eating.

Obesity is a medical condition where the fat reserves in the body exceeds its upward limit to such an extent, that it can give rise to health complications in the obese person, sometimes even endangering his life.

* Counting calories is important, as it helps one keep track of how much one is consuming per day.
